I build and market websites for a living, and the question I get most from students and young professionals is the same: "Blog shuru karna hai — kahan se start karoon?" This is the complete answer. Follow it top to bottom and you will go from nothing to a live, professional, Google-ready blog — for under ₹2,000 in year one.
What you will have by the end: a niche with real demand, your own .com domain, fast WordPress hosting, a clean theme, the right plugins, your first 10 post ideas, and a realistic plan for traffic and income. No fluff, no "just be consistent" platitudes without specifics.
The honest cost breakdown
| Item | Typical cost (year 1) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting (Hostinger Premium) | ~₹1,500–1,900 | Less with code DEEPAM (extra 10% off) |
| Domain (.com) | ₹0 | Free for year 1 with the plan above |
| SSL certificate | ₹0 | Included |
| Theme (Astra free) | ₹0 | Paid themes are optional, later |
| Plugins (LiteSpeed, Rank Math, UpdraftPlus) | ₹0 | Free versions are enough to start |
| Total | under ₹2,000 | Less than a single movie-night-plus-dinner |
Step 1 — Choose a niche with the three-circle test
Most blogs die because the niche was chosen on a whim. Run every idea through three circles and only proceed where all three overlap:
- Circle 1 — Can you write 50 posts about it? Not 5. Fifty. If you cannot list 25 article ideas in 15 minutes, the niche is too thin for you.
- Circle 2 — Do people search for it? Type seed phrases into Google and study autocomplete and the "People also ask" box. Those suggestions are real demand, measured by Google itself, available free.
- Circle 3 — Can it earn? Ask: are there products to recommend (affiliate), advertisers in the space (AdSense), or services you could offer? A diary blog fails this test; "personal finance for college students" passes easily.
Niches that consistently work in India: exam preparation (specific exams, not "education"), personal finance for beginners, regional food and recipes, budget tech reviews, government schemes explained simply, fitness without a gym, and local city guides. Notice the pattern — each is specific. "Tech" is dead; "best phones under ₹15,000" is alive.
Step 2 — Name and register your domain
Rules I give every client: keep it under 15 characters, make it easy to say on the phone, avoid hyphens and numbers, and prefer .com (or .in if your audience is purely Indian). Do not overthink the name — the content builds the brand, not the other way around. Since your domain comes free with hosting (next step), you are not spending extra here.
Step 3 — Set up hosting (the only money you will spend)
Your host decides your speed, and your speed influences your Google rankings. I use Hostinger for this very website — my detailed review explains why — and for a first blog the Premium plan is the sweet spot: free domain, free SSL, LiteSpeed speed, and room to grow. Choose a 24–48 month term to lock the promo price, and apply my code at checkout:

Step 4 — Install WordPress (genuinely five minutes)
- In hPanel, go to Website → Auto Installer → WordPress.
- Select your domain, set your site title, admin email and a strong password.
- Click install. SSL activates automatically — your blog is live on https from minute one.
If you would rather follow a full build walkthrough, I wrote one: how to make a WordPress website in 30 minutes.
Step 5 — The five settings every new blog must change
- Permalinks: Settings → Permalinks → "Post name". Clean URLs matter for SEO and for humans.
- Timezone & title: Settings → General → set Kolkata timezone and a clear tagline.
- Theme: install Astra or GeneratePress (both free, both fast). Import a starter template and customise colours — done.
- Plugins (only these three to start): LiteSpeed Cache (speed — pairs natively with Hostinger), Rank Math (SEO), UpdraftPlus (backups). Every extra plugin is extra weight; resist the urge.
- Pages: create About, Contact and Privacy Policy. You will need all three for Google AdSense approval later, and the About page is what makes AI search engines treat you as a real person (more on that below).
Step 6 — Your first 10 posts (use these templates)
Stop staring at a blank screen. In any niche, these ten formats work:
- The complete beginner's guide to [topic]
- [Number] mistakes beginners make with [topic]
- Best [tools/products] for [audience] under [price]
- [Thing A] vs [Thing B]: which one for [audience]?
- How to [achieve outcome] in [timeframe]
- [Topic] explained in simple words
- My honest review of [product you actually use]
- Step-by-step: how I [did specific thing]
- Frequently asked questions about [topic] — answered properly
- [Current year] checklist for [task]
Write one post per topic at 800–1,500 words, answer the question completely, and add an FAQ section at the end of each — that FAQ habit pays off twice, in Google and in AI search.
Step 7 — SEO and AI-search (GEO) basics that actually move the needle
- Connect Google Search Console on day one and submit your sitemap (Rank Math generates it). This is how Google discovers you.
- One post = one search intent. Do not write "everything about cooking" — write "how to season a cast-iron tawa".
- Internal links: every new post should link to 2–3 of your older posts, the way this article does.
- For AI search (ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews): write clear, factual sentences that can be quoted standalone; use real FAQ sections; put your name and credentials on an About page. AI engines cite sources that look like confident, identifiable experts.
- Speed: already handled if you followed steps 3–5 — LiteSpeed hosting plus LiteSpeed Cache covers Core Web Vitals for you.
Step 8 — How and when the money comes (realistic timeline)
| Month | Milestone | Income reality |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | 15–20 quality posts published | ₹0 — building phase, apply nowhere yet |
| 3–4 | First Google impressions and clicks | Affiliate links can start earning (recommend tools you use) |
| 4–6 | Apply for AdSense once approval requirements are met | First small ad income |
| 6–12 | Traffic compounds; best posts updated and expanded | ₹5k–₹25k+/month is realistic for consistent niche blogs |
Anyone promising faster is selling you something. The blogs that win are simply the ones still publishing in month six.
Seven mistakes that kill new Indian blogs
- Choosing free hosting/subdomains — looks amateur, breaks AdSense, painful to migrate later.
- Spending week one on logo design instead of writing.
- Copying content — Google and AI detectors bury it; your experience is the only moat.
- Publishing 300-word posts — thin content ranks for nothing.
- Chasing 10 niches at once — authority needs focus.
- Quitting at month two — precisely when the compounding starts.
- Ignoring email — add a simple subscribe box from day one; your list is the only audience you own.

Frequently asked questions
Can I start a blog completely free in India?
Technically yes, on free subdomains — but you cannot properly run AdSense, you look less credible to readers and brands, and migrating later is messy. ₹150 a month is the cost of seriousness.
How many posts before applying for AdSense?
15–20 genuinely useful posts, plus About/Contact/Privacy pages, on your own domain. Quality and originality matter more than raw count.
Hindi blog ya English blog — which earns more?
English has higher ad rates (CPC); Hindi has explosive search growth and lower competition. Best answer: whichever language you can write 50 excellent posts in.
How much time per week does a blog need?
Two posts a week at quality level = roughly 6–8 focused hours. One post a week still works; zero posts a week never does.
Which hosting do you personally use?
Hostinger — this site runs on it. Code DEEPAM gets you an extra 10% off; the how-to-apply guide is here.
